Place du Vieux Marché aux Poteries

It's a pedestrian space located:

  • on the left bank of the Schelde river, in the historic heart of Tournai
  • between the south side of the Cathedral and the Belfry, both UNESCO heritage monuments
  • in a shopping area and close to the Market Place

Since its restoration in the 90’s, The Vieux Marché aux Poteries is one of the nicest spots in the historic centre of Tournai. Restored at the same period, the “St Luc painting the Virgin Mary » statue, an allegory to the painter Roger de le Pasture born in Tournai in 1399, adds an aesthetic touch to the space. It is frequented by the Tournai inhabitants and also by many tourists going to visit the cathedral. The commercial activity of the space is made up of at least a bar, a restaurant and a souvenirs shop. A market is held every Saturday morning. Few cultural and/or tourist activities are organized (occasionally the music festival, a mediaeval market, …).

Since a while, the Vieux Marché aux Poteries has become a parking spot for cars taking advantage of accesses created by the companies working for the Cathedral restoration.
