Place Communale, La Louvière

“Place Communale” is very close to “Place Maugrétout”, only separated by a street. Both squares have been renovated in the same spirit: mineral spaces, blue stones, same urban furniture. They have been turned from car parks to pedestrian areas. The town Hall on “Place Communale” is opposite to the church on “Place Maugrétout”. Several activities and events take place there: Monday’s and Thursday’s markets, Franco Dragone’s urban show “Décrocher la lune” (every three years. The show attracted 21000 people in 2009.), the annual flowers market…

“Place Communale” will be close to the future new district “Boch”, directly linked to the park. This square is mainly dedicated to art, culture and administration (Town hall, Ianchelevici Museum, Theatre, Music academic school and sculptures). People go there on purpose. That square is less frequented end less visible than the others in town center.

Since the square has been renewed, we can see people practicing or learning bike, skate and rollers. A circus workshop likes to practice there when the weather is good. There are also lessons of tightrope walking organized in the theater.

From October until early January 2012, we have focused on the analysis of Maugrétout and Communal squares: surveys with administrative staff, residents and shop owners, observations, interviews with "privileged witnesses" and a Christmas market test on communal square.

We would like to reinforce this culture and art identity. We will work in partnership with associations: creative workshops, circus workshops, funambulism and urban art (Graff, bike, skate, rollers, monocycle,…) We would like to invest in furniture to help these activities taking place outside on public space and being seen.
